Hi Barry,

It looks like there are some issues relating to how GnuPG 2.x
interacts with shells differently from 1.x. There are some pointers here:

The way I avoid this kind of hassle is to install enigmail system-wide
(rather than per-user as a thunderbid/icedove add-on) then any
dependency / compatibility problems should be taken care of by the
package management system. This means you don't get the bleeding edge
of the latest releases, but there's an additional layer of quality
control as the package maintainer should check it all works correctly
before pushing out an upgrade.

You can access some other common add-ons in the same way (in Debian) -
adblock plus, iceowl and so on. To get an idea of what's available, try:

$ apt-cache rdepends icedove

If you want to install any of them system-wide, best uninstall the
per-user ones first to avoid confusion, then for example:

# apt-get install enigmail

I'd also turn off the "check for updates" options in icedove/tbird to
inhibit it from phoning home so much, as you're updates are now in the
hands of the OS anyhow.
