Greetings from your friendly neighbourhood LUG! :)

Yes, we've finally got round to putting together the mailing list (using
Open Source Software of course, none of your nasty yahoogroups stuff here!
:P ) any member can email the whole group using the address
gla at mailman.lug.org.uk, so expect a barrage of spam very soon!

anyway, to business... There will be a brief Extraordinary General Meeting
of the LUG on Monday, 30th January, at 7pm, in Boyd Orr Lecture Theatre E to
discuss a proposed constitutional amendment.

The SRC would like us to slightly amend the current constitution of the LUG
(yes, that's right, we have one!) It doesn't make any difference whatever to
the spirit of the document, and i very much doubt any reasonable person
would object to it in principle, although wording and specifics may well be
debatable.

If you're already bored, please just reply to this email with a simple
"Yes". :)

The bit of the constitution the SRC are querying is clauses 3.6 - 3.8, which
read:

"3.6    In extreme circumstances, following a two-thirds majority vote by
the Executive, a member may be banned from the LUG.
3.7    Any banned member shall have the right to appeal before the next AGM,
where only a simple majority shall be required to reinstate membership
rights.
3.8    Any such banned member may also, on submission to the Executive of a
petition signed by 10% of the membership, force an EGM with one calendar
months' notice."

The purpose of 3.6 is that if one particular person was being extremely
disruptive or malicious towards the rest of the group and all reasonable
attempts to resolve the situation failed, there would be a way of getting
rid of the person (although it would hopefully never be used). 3.7-3.8 are
to protect against the executive using this power unfairly.

The SRC have requested that we be more specific about 3.6, and I propose the
following:

"3.6    In extreme circumstances, following a two-thirds majority vote by
the Executive, a member may be banned from the LUG. This action is one of
last resort, and the Executive must first have taken reasonable steps to
resolve the dispute in question, and must have held a Disciplinary Hearing,
chaired by the sitting SRC VP of Activities and Development, to discuss the
matter."

According to section 5 of the constitution, an amendment requires two-thirds
of the members present to vote in its favour. so if you disagree with this,
please turn up and say so!
