I've just tried to read the archives of this list, but got no joy --
does that mean that there are no archives to read; or that lug.org has
screwed up its mailman installation?  (Hardly likely.)

Let's see if this creates a first mail in the archive -- something that
should have been done by the mailmaster, as this is a well-known bug in
mailman.
