the culprit lay in the folder /var/lib/mysql on mandrake 9.1
the user and host files were overwritten by my fiddling with phpmyadmin.
once i had removed root user i could no longer access the database.
:-doh!
got in as root and purged the files from /var/lib/mysql
removed and reinstalled mysql.
voila`
back to my default settings again.
i'll read the manual as i go this time.

remember people /var holds a lot of logs, spools and lock files that
continually change. these are often linked to by other programs.
if you remove just the program itself without purging the /var/ entries
when you reinstall things are not cured.

i should have known to find the problem there.
