Running anything from a publicly accessible website as root is A Bad
Idea.  Personally, I'd rethink what it is you're doing, and how best to
accomplish it.

Aliasing by placing a directive within httpd.conf is the way to go -- I
can't see that symlinking to anything outside your Document Root is
going to help in any way at all.

Have you checked all ownerships and file permissions?
Who does Apache run as in SUSE?
