Not 'better'.  It 'just works' for me -- and that's good enough reason as 
far as I'm concerned :)

OK -- so look at /usr/share/cups/model/<printer>.ppd

Thr first line //must// be something like:

      *PPD-Adobe: "4.3"

If it ain't, it sounds like a corrupt ppd file.
