[Glastonbury] Realplayer conflict?

Anybody got any ideas on this problem I'm having....

Since I half-upgraded to Ubuntu's Hoary release (I don't think it worked
100% - so I have a sort of Warty Hedgehog at present) when I boot up
Realplayer will not work... it just hangs...

If I leave it a while, say a day or so, it starts working...

Now I'm thinking that this may be a resource conflict... something's
grabbing something that Realplayer needs and not letting go, hence
Realplayer sits there trying to access that resource over and over again
- hence the hang.

Question is: how do I find out what this "thing" is?

Or, if this is barking up the completely wrong tree, anybody got any
other ideas as to why this isn't working?

This happens regardless of whether I'm running realplayer from the
command line (realplay) or embedded video or audio in a webpage (through
Firefox plug-in)... thankfully was working last night for a BBC News
webcast I wanted to watch...
