<< KANOTIX is based on Debian Unstable (Sid) so is, potentially, even
less supportable.>>

but is an improved version of KNOPPIX, according to www.kanotix.com.

Having tried Debian Sarge, KNOPPIX, SUSE, Novell Desktop and Mandrake,
the only distro I found that would work consistently for me (very
limited Linux knowledge) was Kanotix. It is easy to install to a hard
drive, very simple to download programmes (oops, packages) through
'klik' and 'synaptic package manager' and will do a web update
relatively easily. It seems to run all my essential packages, mail,
web, CD burner, sound recorder, O-Office, QCAD for CAD, Samba and I
used ALSA (I think) to configure my sound card.

Maybe it just worked well for me (Compaq E500 laptop and an MSI/AMD
based desktop)

Jan 2005 Linux Format reviews 15 distros - I'm sure the experts here
would disagree with some of the findings, but I found it a very
informative article which highlights some important problems with all
the distros. They put Mandrake at no 1 because "...virtually anyone
can install and configure it thanks to the clear GUI design" but they
do comment on its stability problems.
