seriously

i have always had niggles with samba

if you use webmin, there is a nice synchronise samba users with local users etc

also with webmin you can  control any aspect of the box, we use it for
backing up database, mysql database editing, rebooting serever,
transfering files ,

its really easy to install from a tarball as well
