OK. If you can't use X, don't :)  I don't have a Mandriva here to check:

assuming you can use "vanilla" rpm commands 

rpm -U <name of rpm> 

should Update rpms and install them if not already
installed. Check on the CD for where the rpms directory is: rpm -U
*font* or even xorg*

I _know_ Mandrake has urpmi (if I've spelt it correctly) but I know
rpm commands only.  

Personally, as most people on the list know, I'd use Debian - but I 
do know how painful it is when something gets hosed, you are up against
it and need to bone up on command line tools for the first time in ages
