Sorry about excessive brevity. I thought this was common terminology.
If you press CTRL-ALT-F[1-6] you get a 'virtual terminal' screen with
80x25 characters in white on black. Derives, probably, from the old
VT100 terminal and its relatives (though V may have stood for
'visual'). Anyway the point is that Ubuntu (up to HH) gets it wrong. 
Other Debian flavours seem to be ok.
