You could do it from audio out - degrading quality of course and missing 
the video - but just a newscast

I seem to remember a Linux / Open source ripping utility for Real Video. 
    It may have just been Real Audio only.

Some sites are silly enough to have a direct link to the file in the 
real audio link (which is a text file giving directions to the source) 
You can then put that source as your browser address line and suck the 
file down using http.
