Stoopid question, but why not use the headphone socket on your docking
station?

My lappy CPxH/P3-500 runs Linux, as does various Optiplex G1's and GA's.

I'd agree - my laptops still going despite being on it's 4th main board.
Oh and that was my fault, I keep breaking the headphone socket when I pull
it out of the docking station ;-)
