It does take ages even on newer machines. Of course, you could always
generate a dsa keypair with ssh-keygen on another (trusted!) machine
and use that.

rsh and friends have a facility for passwordless login; for remote
copying; and to run a command on the remote host rather than just
getting a login shell.
