[Gllug] iptables

I've been reading up the various networking, firewall, ip masqerading
etc HOWTOs.
I'm thinking perhaps I can't see the wood for the trees.

Is it the case that firewalls and IP masquerading is all basically done
via the iptables (formerly ipchains/ipfwadm) command?
(excluding the general security stuff like stopping unneeded servers
etc)

Do the commercial firewalls basically just generate iptables commands
for you?

My situation is a small home network of 2 (hopefully 3 soon) PCs
connected via ethernet. I want to have one with a 56k modem as the
firewall machine with the others accessing the internet through this
(using IP masquerading) so they all appear as one IP address.

Is it basically just iptables I need to sort out both firewall and
masquerading?
I'd like to do it from scratch (for the learning process) rather than
use some pre-built firewall product.
I'm with Demon so I should have a fixed IP address.
