I forgot to mention;
I also tried my Redhat with 2.4.7 kernel at run level 2 and started X manually
with 'startx', and it still worked OK, although tty1 seem to still be
'attached' to the startx program whilst the graphical display was on tty7
(ctrl/c on tty1 then killed the X session).
My 'man' page says the system is using X version 11

Don't know whether this info is of any use !!
