[Gllug] ssh

Well this is kind of related to my post earlier about compatibility of
rpm's.
I installed Mandrake 8.0 on a Pentium II (it uses i586 rpm's, though I
didn't notice this at the time)
I then switched the hard drive into the 486/33.
It all seems to work fine.
I have openssh and openssh-client installed from the start as i586 rpm's
and they work fine as clients to the Pentium machine's server.
If I try to install openssh-server (i586) version now it complains about
incompatible architecture (I tried --force but no luck).
So I downloaded a i386 version and installed that no problem (I had to
use --nodeps because of some dependency problem because of some slightly
different build number (2.4.3p2-3mdk instead of 2.4.3p2-5mdk or
something) plus some library that was actually there(?))

So maybe my rpm installation isn't ideal :-) but I'm just playing around
really - nothing mission critical.
If I get no luck with waiting for the keys to build I'll get all three
openssh packages as i386 and identical versions, though the problem is I
may get into a dependency domino effect and end up replacing half the
packages.

Maybe the long-term solution is not to use Mandrake for ageing hardware?
I've thought about Debian but thought maybe it would be too much of a
headache, plus I don't think my 56k modem is up to a network install.
Is Debian OK for someone who's not a total newbie but not exactly a
Linux whizzkid either?
I'm basically just using the 486 to play around with networking so I
don't need X or anything like that, just a cut-down system with vi and
networking stuff on it.
