Alter your boot sequence to load to a ram disk. Install plenty of RAM.
Load data into RAM, run off that. Spin down HD.

Works for me (I use an old laptop as a gateway), lovely and silent. 

Alternatively, install polystyrene/carpet. I hear that works reasonably
well...
