I need to upgrade ghostscript on Debian potato so that I can get my new HP
deskjet 960c working.
I don't want to migrate to woody as this is my production box so I want to
do a source code install - I could do it by just getting the tarball and
manually compiling it but I would rather do it the Debian way.

However I type:-

apt-get source gs --compile

It gets the source code and starts to try to build a package for it but it
fails at dh_clean. The dh_clean says that that the maximum compatability
(sic) level for this is 2. The testing version of dh_clean is 3

Any suggestions?
