I would add to that though: the "man" pages can be a little jargon-laden
and obscure especially for someone new to Linux. For more accessible
information on various topics I find the "HOWTO" guides useful.
Just search for "linux howto" on Google - there is a whole set of these
freely available online on various topics and they cover more how to get
something done plus a bit of background theory. The man pages usually
have little more than the pure syntax - it seems they're aimed more at
programmers than end users.
