Linux is as reliable on an 8 year old 386 (if a little slow) as it is
on a modern P4 or Athlon. The hardware makes very little difference
to reliability, at least for a standard server or desktop machine.

Be careful. There are some pretty strong-worded and blunt people on
this list (some of which you have come into contact with :-)) but
what they say should hardly ever be perceived as attacks. The
particular rant that you first took exception too was actually a rant
to the list at large and not to you personally. You made it a lot
worse by replying to it in an even more aggressive fashion. It's
understandable as I have done so myself, but it rarely helps. Don't
leave the list. Stick around and observe for a bit longer. You will
figure out who the ranters are and then just ignore them if you wish.
One small point however. Before you post questions on the list, have
a look at the man pages first for your answers. Whilst everyone is
here to help, no-one want's to just quote passages from the manual
that you could have looked up first. Type 'man man' for more details.
Glad that you are making the move to Linux. It is a whole different
world to Win32 but its worth the effort :-)
Good Luck.
