One day last week, a routine init 6 left me with a box that wouldn't boot.
Not even single user. After much trawling thru init scripts (using the
rescuse CD) I discovered that the shell code in rc.sysinit barfs, right at
the part where it's trying to build /boot/kernel.h
I've removed this piece of code, and sure enough the box boots OK again.
After a little googling, it appears that this file is only used for
creating RPM's, so that the RPM name comes together with the right
architecture flag, e.g.
sompackage-0.0.0-i686.rpm
As I'm not building RPM's right now, I'm none too fussed. However, it
appears to be having an effect on my rpm commands, now far slower.
Any one else experience problems with /boot/kernel.h?
I think I'm just going to leave the code disabled, and munge a new
/boot/kernel.h by hand, until I upgrade my distro.

PS Tried new build of RH7.2... things didn't work too well... now back on
7.0 updated to 7.1.
