Technically, it goes to the first non-whitespace character in the line.
Either "0" or "|" go to the beginning of a line, irrespective of which
character it is.

Beginners to vi may find the attached vi quick reference sheet useful.
I can't find my original copy (which had 3 columns to a page, and
hence the whole thing fitted onto a single double sided sheet of
A4). This one instead comes from the original vi documentation,
which can now be found as part of the nvi distribution (available at
http://www.bostic.com/vi/). I'd recommend downloading the nvi sources
for the documentation if nothing else. There's a complete reference
guide, as well as a tutorial, and several other useful docs.
