My isp (Force 9/Plusnet)

provide me for the fantastic one off non refundable payment of 120 pounds
per year a fantastic friaco connection.

the connection uses a tried and failed old authentication and handshaking
system called CRAP. this authentication method relies on sending no data
to the client whatsoever. yes thats right no 'ogin:' and no '~' from pap
:-)

to see if CRAP was successful your modem will disconnect and tell you that
there was nothing at the other end

no matter what modem you have what os, what location then you always use
CRAP to connect with when i use plusnet/force9.
