You can buy an SGI 20" (GDM20D11) from cordnet.co.uk for £80 as I did
a while ago, or get a Sun/SGI 17" for £40 - should work fine. You could
use a VGA, but the Sun's (a) use a 13W3 instead of VGA connector, and
(b) speak sync-on-green rather than multisync. A 13W3->VGA adaptor might
set you back £30 or so, and the circuit is just afew pence worth of
electronics and some soldering. I'd go with buying a monitor considering
the amount of time the circuit took me, and the small difference between
£30 for an adaptor and £40 for a monitor. :)
