Perl-like in London.

If you use Perl in your work or for fun and you've not been to a
London PM meeting before pop along for this one and try the new venue.

Lonix
Home Page: http://www.lonix.org.uk/
Contact Email: info at lonix.org.uk

The aim of Lonix is quite straightforward although it comprises of
many points. The overall aim is to unite many Linux individuals in and
around London. Below is a list of aims, but you as a member may not
agree to all of them. (Hopefully at least one!)

Meet like minded individuals to share ideas and discuss opinions.
To provide a Linux force in London to persuade the industry to opt
for a more Linux friendly approach to their services and products.
To assist users with problems, providing advice and physical help, do Linux
advocacy and have one of the busiest stalls at the expo :)

Time: 6pm onwards
Place: Auberge, 6 St Christopher's Place, W1. 020 7486 5557
Nearest Tube: Bond Street
Contact: 020 8992 7008 / 07719 330130

Directions: From Bond St. Tube cross over Oxford St.,

corner and Pizza Express next to it. In the square
you will find St Christophers place and the Auberge is on
the right. The bar is situated in the nice cool basement.

This months Lonix has been timed to catch the first day of the London Linux
expo so if your going to that come and say hi to the GLLUG, UKUUG or Lonix
stalls. On the Wednesday we will be meeting at the Lonix stand, which
is stand number 230 at 5pm to go to the Auberge en mass. Last year we had
over a hundred people turn up, lets see if we can do better this time :)

-----------------------------------
GLLUG
Home Page: http://gllug.linux.co.uk/

Greater London Linux User Group's (GLLUG) purpose is to bring together
London's Linux users so they can share experiences and expertise (or
revel in their inexperience and quest for expertise), to chat about
the state of the (Linux) world, that sort of thing.

We try to arrange meets so that there is space for users to set up
their equipment, so you are welcome to bring your kit along, either to
go through the problems you are having or just to show off what you
are up to.

There are no formalities to attending a GLLUG meeting, no subscription
or entry fees, you can just turn up on the day. We welcome and
encourage new and inexperienced users, young and old.

Due to the high turnout GLLUG meetings are less frequent than the
other user groups, you can get notification of the next meeting either
on the home page or through this mail but the next meet will probably not
be until after the summer. The mailing list however will stay as busy as
usual.

-----------------------------------
SAGE-WISE
Home Page: http://www.sage-wise.org/
Map: http://www.sage-wise.org/lecture/directions.html

SAGE-WISE is the System Administrators Guild for Wales, Ireland,
Scotland and England, hence the "-WISE" suffix. Our aim is to form a
professional association for system administrators in the UK and
Ireland.

But what is a system administrator?

Professional system administrators, however, often look after large
numbers of computers and networks - they are the people who keep the
systems running, repair faulty discs, install and debug new software,
upgrade existing systems, and generally take care of the computing
resources needed for their users to perform their tasks effectively. A
shorter definition is "A system administrator is one who manages
computers not solely for his or her own use". If you know the joys and
frustrations of this then feel free to come and visit one of our
meetings.

This months SAGE-WISE meeting is on Tuesday 10th July 2001 at the usual
time and place (19:30, Eisai Lounge, University College London, map on the
website) and features a talk lead by Mike Knell on the state of
Professional Development for system admins.

-----------------------------------
SLLUG http://www.sllug.org.uk/

The South London Linux Users' Group is a regional LUG that may be of
interest to people that can't make the Central London ones or want to join
another mailing list dedicated to Linux.

No details of the July meet yet so keep an eye on the SLLUG announce list
for details. http://feeler.sllug.org.uk/pipermail/sllug-announce/

-----------------------------------
FreeBSD UKUG http://www.freebsd-uk.eu.org/
The FreeBSD UKUG is a users' group based in the UK for UK FreeBSD UNIX
Users. No meetings have been announced yet this month but you can look for
details here http://www.freebsd-uk.eu.org/meetings.html

Outside London Events:
-----------------------------------

YAPC::Europe:
YAPC is "yet another Perl conference". This is an inexpensive, grassroots
Perl conference with its roots in the Perl Mongers Perl users groups, and
is supported by Yet Another Society.

This years conference is Thursday, 02/08/2001 -- 04/08/2001 and is located
in Amsterdam. More details can be found here:
http://www.yapc.org/Europe/

LinuxTag
Homepage:
http://www.linuxtag.org/2001/deutsch/showitem.php3?item=179&lang=en

Running over Thursday, 5th July, till Sunday, 8th July 2001 LinuxTag is one
of Europes biggest Linux events. Entry is free and most of the talks will
be in English or German so check which before you sign up for the sessions
:)

The Linuxbierwanderung 2001 (Beer Hike)
Homepage: http://lbw2001.ynfonatic.de/

The Linuxbierwanderung is a yearly recurring event in which Linux users
hike the hills and valleys of an area selected for its natural beauty and its
beer. A motley crew of GLLUG, Lonix and London PMer's will be making their
way to scare the locals so keep you eyes open on the LBW mailing list for
details.

This year, the Linuxbierwanderung will visit Belgium, home of the widest
variety of special beers anywhere. The place we have chosen is Bouillon,
located in the famous Ardennes, in the Semois river valley. Bouillon is
dominated by its castle, which was founded in the year 1096, and has a rich
medieval history. It is also well know for its great hiking, and it has a
local brewery annex beer shop with over 300 types of beer on sale.

Other Stuff:
-----------------------------------

Event Calendar:
Alasdair Kergon has come up with an essential resource for events all
around the country and then some.

If you have anything you'd like to get added then you can speak to him
at agk at ukuug.org or even just let him know how good a job he's doing. :)

The London Linux Expo:
4th and 5th of July.
Homepage: http://www.linuxexpo.co.uk

A yearly event showcasing what's happening in parts of the Linux world.
Entry is free if you preregister, unless your a student in which case your
not allowed in. A mistake that they still haven't rectified since last
year when Maddog Hall made a point of it to the organisers.

Ignore the fact that the site is less than encouraging and seems to have
been designed in IE and come along to go "Ahhh!" at the new software.

<Note: The points about the site and the students not being allowed in are
my own views.>

-----------------------------------
Community Recognition:
In this section I'd like to include people or companies that have
contributed or helped one or more of the user groups in some way. A
lot of people quietly contribute time, money or effort and get no
recognition for it. This month I'd like to thank:

State 51 (www.state51.co.uk)
Still haven't learned to say no and donated the floorspace and yet more
beer for last months London PM tech meet.

Computer Film Company & Framestore (www.framestore.co.uk)
These two very generous companies allowed GLLUG to use one of their
private cinema's for a GLLUG technical event. Twice! And they have a very
nice kebab shop nearby.

Turtle Networks (www.turtle.net)
Turtle have the thankless (and difficult) job of organizing Lonix every
month and making sure that everyone has a hangover the day after. Pop along
to the stall at the Linux expo to say hi to some of the people that run it.

Richard Cohen
For putting up with too many nit picking coders, shell scripters and
sysadmins 'contributing details' in the audience during his talk.

Of which i wasn't one. Honest ;)
-----------------------------------

Any comments (Good or bad), suggestions of groups to add or ideas for
recognition of services to London Community groups are welcome at
dean.wilson3 at virgin.net

Expect a different format next month, but i promise no html!
