[Gllug] rpm problem

further to the problems with rpm's:

I was trying to install something yesterday from an rpm that needed
libXv.so.1
This *should* be in the XFree86-libs rpm, but in the Mandrake 8.0
distribution it isn't, only libXv.a is.
I checked on rpmfind.net and downloaded the 4.0.3-11 version of
XFree86-libs (or something) - the original one is 4.0.3-7, so this
should be just a bugfix that's compatible with the rest of the
distribution. (shouldn't it?)
The new package does have libXv.so.1, but when I tried to upgrade to it,
I found it didn't have some other files, libXft or something, which
other rpm's depended on.

Is there some central agreement on what packages contain, or does it
just depend on the distributor?

Is there a way of only extracting/installing a few selected files from
an rpm? Or of upgrading and only overwriting without deleting all
original files first? I looked through the rpm help but couldn't see
anything.

I also couldn't find anywhere to download just libXv.so.1 - do I have to
download a whole package (slow dial-up connection) just to get that one
file?
