In general, any front-end written by the apt boys - or, to a degree,
dselect with the 'apt' installation method - will suffer.

It's not clear what the answer is. I use dselect+apt because I find
the 'multiple repository' functionality useful and am willing to fight
the crapness of apt; there is no one ideal way. It may just be a
matter of what bugs you the least.
