Oh nooooo..... nooooo.......
I now have this crazy idea in my mind about Mapping British Rail.

We take a bunch of geeks - no, that's too cruel.
We need to round up a bunch of gullible trainspotters.
We send them off from Paddington to random destinations,
with a thermos of tea, a packet of sandwiches and 10p for
the phone. They phone back to us with the arrival time and
a traceroute of interchange stations.

Of course, to implement Steve's methods properly, as in
the talk on Saturday, we would also need to parachute in
trainspotters to randomly chosen remote stations, eg. Thurso,
to make it back to Paddington.

Then when the grant money starts rolling in we go on to start
mapping THE WORLD via the Eurotunnel.
(Well, maybe not the whole world, as I guess the farthest our ping
packets will reach from Paddington is Vladivostok via the
Trans-Siberian.)

And, oh, I'm allowing Tube, Metro and Clockwork Orange journeys as
valid.
