Don't use basic vi, then. Use Vim or one of the other improved
versions. My .vimrc has this line:
au BufNewFile,BufRead *.txt,mutt\-*,.article*
\ set textwidth=72 formatoptions=tcq
Which sets a 72 character limit for files ending in .txt, mutt e-mails
and tin articles.
