If you think you need to italicise text in email, then you're wrong :-)
You may need to emphasis certain things, but asterisks do that just as
well (and IMHO, often better) than italics. Particularly on text only
terminals...

Plus, what's stopping you from right justifying text? True, you don't know
how wide the terminal is, but you can assume 80 columns without problems.
Any more than that, and it loses readability anyway...
