Is there not a better alternative in the latest kernels called
intermezzo?

www.inter-mezzo.org looks very interesting.

I think the difference between that and that nfs is that with nfs you
have only one copy of the data, here you have a duplicate on the local
file system (can be an encrypted loopback filesystem).  Hence you need
the space available.
