Sounds like a SOCKS proxy - I'm SSHing through one right now...
http://www.socks.nec.com/ is the place to look for info if it is a SOCKS
proxy - I got the reference implementation and it works just fine. There's
also a free implementation called Dante at http://www.inet.no/dante/
There's info at http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Firewall-HOWTO-11.html and that
kind of place.
