Or something like RedHat bundling a bleeding-edge GCC with their distro, 
which broke kernel compilation?

I use Slackware because I like it. 'nuff said :-) Actually, I also like it 
because of the (lack of) package management - it doesn't hold my hand, so I'm 
free to play and upgrade with the system how I want, and if I break the 
system, I can revert back to older versions without having to fight with a 
package manager saying that 'so-and-so is already installed'.

I use Irix on an Indy because that's what it came with, and I haven't had 
time to play around with Linux yet (I'd want to stick another hard drive in 
there for that, anyway). It's the same reason I've got Solaris on my Suns.

I've got OpenBSD as a firewall because, quite frankly, I trust it to be 
secure, and I much prefer the firewall/NAT configuration compared to Linux.
