I've had similar problems, I think some cables provide the master/slave
selection (depends which drive is plugged in to which plug/socket on the
cable) others require the hdd to have correct jumper settings to select
these. So there is about 4 or more combinations that are available
depending on cable and it needs to be connected right for it to work.
Don't remember how you can tell which type of cable etc you have sorry
has been a while since I played with them, I normally just swap them
round 'til it boots.
