With the risk of appearing extreamly pedantic, surely in this forum, the 
following would be more apt:

> martin at nomad:~$ perl -e 'print time'

date +%s

> martin at nomad:~$ perl -e 'print scalar localtime(1000000000)'

date -d '1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC +1000000000 seconds'

plus at my reconing that's 3 less keystrokes in total :p
Yes, I'm sad enough to count them.
