Place where I used to work put all of the useful CD up on the network 
but found that CD towers were not really workable (too many CDs), so 
placed them on a set of stripped hard disks. With the current price 
of hard disks you could get a 60GB disk to hold a hundred CD for less 
than a hundred pounds. Probably be cheaper, easier and quicker for you.

As most of the files were large they found that increasing the block 
size above 1k (to 32k I think) gave a good performance boast, but the 
filesystem was UFS on Solaris (which can get rather slow IMHO).
