That's because building gnome-libs with xalf support makes your whole
machine horribly slow during window operations as it ctxt-switch
thrashes between the panel and whatever you're doing; painting menus can
take multiple seconds.

(At least, I *think* it's xalf doing this, but I haven't got round to
rebuilding the appropriate huge chunks of GNOME with profiling to
validate this.)
