Hardly; Compaq bought DEC years ago, and actively developed Alpha for
a little while afterwards.

My guess is that the death of Alpha was anticipating this deal; HP
having killed PA-RISC in favour of IA-64 would then find it difficult
to own the CPU that's proof that non-Intel designs can be viable.

If you mean that they sell only one OS running on only one processor,
not so; they sell Solaris x86 and Cobalt Linux-based boxes.

If you mean that they control both the OS and the processor, IBM can
claim that _twice_; once for S/390 (not a UNIX) and once for RS/6000 +
AIX.
