DOS: a very quick hack by a definite hacker type (Tim Paterson) that
     was force-grown to monstrous size through no fault of Tim's.

Windows: versions below 3.0:  fairly impressive works of assembler
         filled with utterly *evil* tricks

         3.0 and later: astonishingly bloated, buggy, and
         pedestrian crap :(
