[Gllug] running TV and webcam simultaneously

I've got a TV card (PCI) and a Webcam (USB), both of which work under
Linux on their own but I can't seem to be able to get them to work
simultaneously or even to be able to switch between the two.
If I boot with the webcam unplugged everything defaults to the TV card.
If I boot with the webcam plugged in as well xawtv shows the webcam
output only but the xawtv menu that selects the video input doesn't have
an option to switch to the TV card.
I think I have all the modules installed for both OK. (bttv, pwc, pwcx,
etc.)
It seems to be done through /dev/video symlinked to /dev/video0. I've
tried changing the symlink around to /dev/video1 etc but no luck.
So firstly is it possible in theory to have them both running at once
and secondly how do I switch between the two video inputs without
rebooting?
I'm using Debian with a self-compiled 2.4.18 kernel.
