On Tue 13 Aug, Gordon Joly made the following spurious claims:

PNG isn't a good format for continuous-tone images if you're putting
them online.  It's designed as a replacement for GIF online with
lossless and bit depth features to make it a suitable replacement for
TIFF.

Archive the scans in PNG, by all means, but put them online as JPEGs.
