[Gllug] Mutt

I have the following line in my .muttrc:
set mail_check=2                # how often to poll for new mail

However mutt does not seem to reliably check and advise my of new mail.  I am used to pine where as soon as the spool file is touched it will shout at me.  

I am not trying to start a holy war but was wondering if there was something that I was missing.  I only seem to get notified of new mail as I move between mailboxes which is not great when it sits in the background while I am doing other work :-)
