If you are serious about this, spend some time/money
doing the benchmarks yourselves.
Your environment (development/os/social/management
policy, etc) will have a much bigger impact on
the performance than you might expect, and can
often be the biggest difference. It's also fun to do.
Another bonus is that you will probably have already
done a lot of the work/research involved in setting up
the rdbms software you select, and have gained a
ridiculous amount of background knowledge along the way.
Stuff you will have to learn, it's just a question of
when.
Hence your research phase is longer/costlier, but you
save at least the time & cost on your implementation
stage. And you have better skills for your CV....
Plus, you ought to be a lot more confident about your
research/numbers than if you take someone else's figures.
Which could easily be wrong in your environment.
You ought to be able to wangle free evaluation copies
of most commercial rdbm's too.
Just make sure you identify what are the important
features before you start, then evaluate against those.
And don't forget things like availability of developers,
contractor rates, support costs and easy of use
while you are at it.
