Thanks Lee,

I am running version 0.9.5-13 but I believe now that the problem is that my 
Xircom PCMCIA modem has grabbed IRQ3 which is what the serial port wants to 
use too.

I also noticed that If the pilot daemon is running, I get problems with the 
internet connection.  

Any clues on how to get round this - is it worth trying USB ?
