xzx was originally written by a friend of mine (Des Herriott). He
released it under a BSD license, whereupon someone else took the
codebase, added some new features, and took it proprietary. I still
have the last free version that Des released lying around somewhere,
which is perfectly adequate for playing all my old games. The proprietary
version only adds things like better Spectrum +2/+3 support, extra sound
support and so on. But the free version still runs all of the 16K and
48K Spectrum games that I've thrown at it without any problems.

The original xzx is available (along with all other things Sir Clive
