The thing that has put me off using the hjkl keys to move around in vim
is that they are NOT the home keys I was trained on. All the typing
training I've done (not a massive amount, grant you, but enough that I
can get an impressive clickety-click out of the keyboard and not make
too many mistakes...) teaches the following keys as 'home keys'

a s d f  j k l ;

To reach the g or h between the left and right hands, I extend my index
finger - otherwise you end up with an awkward stretch when you need to,
for example, extend you right little finger to reach the # key (without
moving the other fingers).

I guess I could remap hjkl to jkl; - but for now, I still tend to use
the arrow keys.

Or are you working on a definition of 'home keys' that has nothing to
do with the canons of touch typing?
