[Gllug] ppp/USB ADSL modem woes

What does your /var/log/messages say for this?
The last line should say something like this:
Speedmgmt[2074]: Modem initialised at 576 kbit/s downstream and 288
kbit/s upstream
(for the Alcatel drivers only I think?)
I find also I have to unplug and replug the modem in after every boot.

you should have this in /etc/modules.conf:
alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp_async
also you need to compile the kernel with the "ppp async" option set to
module (somewhere in the ppp setup)
