I don't know if this was mentioned, but I was under the impression you need
to use tar -pcvf the p being preserving time and permissions rather than
just -cvf. Also I tend not to gzip my backups to tape in case there is a
problem you lose the whole archive from what I remember. Where as an
uncompressed tar is still recoverable.
