True, but it's rare to find a situation where you need a serial
console and not some kind of ethernet connectivity for it. Here,
for example, we have production servers hosted off site.
A serial console is of little use if you need to go down to the
hosting facility there with a laptop to connect to the serial port
whenever anything goes wrong. As it stands, I can get console level
access to all of our production boxen from my desktop machine here.
Of course, that's a conscious tradeoff I'm making -- allowing remote
console access for increased ease of use, at the expense of security.
But so long as you're aware that the tradeoff is being made, and are
happy with the consequences, there's no problem.
